How many professional driving lessons do I actually need?

As a rough guide, learners who mostly practise with a parent or family member tend to benefit from a course of professional lessons spread across their logbook hours rather than clustered at the start or end: early lessons build the fundamentals correctly, and later ones focus on trickier conditions and test readiness. Some states also let a portion of professional lesson time count for more than the same amount of private practice (see the credit noted above where it applies), which can shorten the total time needed to reach the hour requirement. The honest answer is: enough that the learner is genuinely comfortable, not just compliant with the hour count. An instructor who has been tracking lesson notes throughout is in the best position to say when that point has been reached.
